Newton Flotman & District WI

Formed in 1990, still going strong for over twenty years, with a membership of around 30 local friendly women from mainly Newton Flotman, Saxlingham, Swainsthorpe and Tasburgh.

The gathering of our group takes place on the 1st Thursday of each month in Newton Flotman Village Centre at 7.30 pm.  Each meeting will involve a speaker on a specialised topic, refreshments and a general social evening.

As a member you are very welcome to join the group in a range of activities just on your door step. We are a friendly, lively, active group who enjoy ourselves and would love to welcome new members to join us.   If you would like to come along as a visitor to meet our members you can, for your first 3 visits are "FREE".

Come and see for yourself!  Or alternatively if you would like to have a chat to find out more then call:

Newton Flotman and District Womens Institute

(What makes an institute? The members.  This is my tribute to them)

“Never a dull moment” could be our motto:

Even when the speaker cancels (or two turn up on the same date) we improvise and have fun.

Wendy, our president, “controls” members from Swainsthorpe, Tasburgh, Tharston and Flordon,( ably assisted by Karen O’Brien who manages our website – so there!) As well as Newton Flotman’s finest.

Four Sandras grace our meetings – must have been a popular name then.

Lillian keeps the scrapbook, recording our zany (and serious) goings on. What a joy to look back!

Only, it can be sad to see yourself many years in the past. But then, when we see how happy we were, it inspires us to forge ahead, mastering new challenges – like making marmalade without Mamade.

Angela offers her head and feet to demonstrators to our (and their) delight – she’s young and pretty and has great feet! Not afraid of a challenge, she or

Amy who strives to win the competitions – do you think she cheats?  Never see dahlias in her garden and yet..........

Diana needs no challenges – she can already make marmalade without Mamade.

Darts are a real challenge. The team’s report is the funniest item of the night: they forget who they played, what the scores were. But, the refreshments at the local hostelry were great!

In contrast, our two Jeans restore order, one in particular with the vital Resolutions.

Swainsthorpe’s Jan runs the raffle: she and little Linda are very talented with flowers.

Indispensable Margaret’s tea team: Linda, Marlene, Pam and Val treat us every meeting to the welcome break, while “upstairs” Royalty is represented by the Kings, Joy and Pauline, not forgetting Victoria.

In photography, Jill inspires us, collecting honours every year.  Charitable giving ranks high on our agenda and Treasurer Joan keeps us on target to meet this aspiration.

We only have one Janice, a treasure who tries to keep us “hale” hearty and healthy.  She makes us hike and collects our Pennies for Friendship.

Our three Pams are a jolly trio and we are so glad to have new members, Eve, Barbara, and Diane.

Enid and Mavis are our theatre buffs, organising outings so that no one misses out on their culture.

So, all in all, a talented, cheerful crew.

In every sense, our institute embodies the aims of our local, national and international movement; from the pledges of the Alberta Creed, through the sentiments of “Jerusalem” to the newest concept:  Inspiring women – inspiring us.

To make our institute everything we want it to be, while understanding that will depend on what we make of it: That friendship, fun and caring of each other ends in a force for good in Newton Flotman and District.
